How Much Does It Cost to Charge an EV?

The short answer: for most U.S. drivers charging at home, an EV costs roughly 4–6 cents per mile in electricity, compared to 12–15 cents per mile for a gasoline car. On 12,000 miles a year, that is typically $900–$1,200 in annual fuel savings β€” before counting lower maintenance costs.

The simple math

Take your EV's efficiency (kilowatt-hours per 100 miles), multiply by your electricity rate, and divide by 100. A Tesla Model 3 at 25 kWh/100 mi charged at the national average of $0.17/kWh costs about 4.3 cents per mile. A 28-mpg gas car at $3.50/gallon costs 12.5 cents per mile. Same distance, roughly one-third the fuel cost.

What this calculator doesn't include (yet)

Fuel is only part of the story. EVs also save on maintenance β€” no oil changes, fewer brake jobs thanks to regenerative braking, and far fewer moving parts. Studies typically put EV maintenance at roughly half the cost of a comparable gas car. On the other side, home charger installation ($500–$2,000) and potentially higher insurance are real costs worth factoring into a full comparison.

EV charging FAQ

How long does home charging take? A Level 2 home charger (240V) adds about 25–40 miles of range per hour β€” plenty to refill overnight. A standard wall outlet (Level 1) adds only 3–5 miles per hour.

Does cold weather affect cost? Yes. Batteries are less efficient in the cold, and cabin heating draws significant power. Expect 15–30% higher consumption in winter.

Is charging free anywhere? Some workplaces, hotels, and shopping centers still offer free Level 2 charging as a perk, though it's becoming less common.

Estimates only. Actual costs vary with your utility rate plan, driving style, and climate.
